Overall though, I was unimpressed by the section of Naples I saw. We definitely were not in the touristy area. It was much larger than I thought and had the feeling of a NYC. The streets were dirty, there were venders selling things everywhere and it appeared run down. We only spent and hour and a half there and when we got back to the train station later to go to Sorrento we were rushed through the terminal to catch the last train. From Naples it was an hour and fifteen minute train ride.
We had no idea where our hostel was and decided to just walk around Sorrento to explore and until we found it. The town was beautiful and we got to experience the night life. I loved how the streets were just lined with people even though cars were coming up and down. There were live bands, spray painters, and those statue people that don't move. After getting directions we realized our hostel was another two miles outside the main town up hill. It was a brutal walk and when we got there we were very disappointed in our choice. It was basically a campsite. There were ants all over all of the three bedroom cabins and the bathrooms wen't any better. But for 11 euro a night we couldn't complain, and both nights we were so tired we didn't even care.
We walked back into town late that night and found a a great bar called the English Inn. It was a club basically and it had a lot of Americans there. We went there both nights.
The next morning we got up really early to take the ferry and see Capri for the day. We got to actually see the ocean and what Sorrento looked like in the daytime. It was gorgeous. The weather was hot and the water was so clear, with cliffs everywhere.
The ferry ride to Capri was very quick. We got there and was surrounded by beach and cliffs again, as well as the traditionally colorful town like most Italian towns.
We split up once we got there and our small group of John, Kyle, Tim, Steve, and I went straight to the boat rental and booked our three hour boat ride around Capri. The boat was all to ourselves and we got to drive and tour the island from the water at our own pace.
There were so many sites and swimming spots along the way. We used every minute of our time. We saw the grotto azulla but didn't get to go in, the grotto bianco and the grotto bianco, and swam in both of those places. We got some great pictures.
Capri was so pretty and we all hated to leave. We ate lunch there, checked out some stores, and then headed back to Sorrento where we caught a train to Pompei.
We went to Pompei, which was about 40 minutes from Sorrento to see the Ancient Pompei. This was the Roman city in Pompei that was completely destroyed from the eruption of Mount Vesuvious in 79 A.D. The city is still very well preserved. I was amazed at how large it was and the amount of art work and architecture put into it. It almost was like a huge maze, because everything seemed connected. It was a beautiful landmark. We spent a good two hours looking around and still didn't get to see everything.
The site was amazing to see. We even got to hear in on a few guided tours to see how they lived and how sophisticated they actually were.
That evening we went back to Sorrento for dinner before we went out again. After dinner the the boat crew stopped in on a wine garden which was really pretty and chilled to have drinks before the club. Our waiter laughed at us as he brought our drinks because we all got Daiquiris, coladas, and margaritas. But they were all so good. By that night we were exhausted and still had to walk up hill to our hostel. The next day we were just as tired and just sat down for hours for our lunch and slept on the train ride home. It was a great trip. Comparable to Cinque Terre but more touristy. We all had a lot of fun.
